The parents had the opportunity to give their son a good upbringing and education. Pythagoras' father dreamed that his son would continue his work - the craft of a goldsmith. But life judged otherwise. The future great mathematician and philosopher already in childhood showed great abilities for the sciences. From his first teacher, Hermodamas, Pythagoras receives knowledge of the basics of music and painting. For memory exercises, Hermodamas forced him to learn songs from the Odyssey and the Iliad. The first teacher instilled in young Pythagoras a love for nature and its mysteries. “There is another School,” said Hermodamas, “your feelings come from Nature, let it be the first and main subject of your teaching.”

His parents encouraged his craving for science. From childhood, the words of the priest, the hierophant Adonai, sounded in him: "If the Greeks have the knowledge of the Gods, then the knowledge of the One God is preserved only in Egypt." To satisfy his thirst for knowledge, Pythagoras, on the advice of his teacher, decided to go to Egypt. But it was not easy to get to him in those days, and at first he had to live for several years on the island of Lesbos with his relative Zoil. There Pythagoras met the philosopher Ferekid, a friend of Faleev of Miletus. Pythagoras studied astrology, the prediction of eclipses, the secrets of numbers, medicine and other sciences obligatory for that time from Pherekides. For 22 years, Pythagoras deeply studied the sacred mathematics, the science of numbers or world principles, which he made the center of his system, giving it a completely new formulation. He was initiated into the Mysteries of Isis and Osiris. In the outbreak of the war with the Persians, Pythagoras was taken into Babylonian captivity, in which he spent 12 years.

According to ancient legends, in Babylon, Pythagoras met with Persian magicians, joined Eastern astrology and mysticism, got acquainted with the knowledge of the Chaldean sages accumulated by Eastern peoples over many centuries: astronomy and astrology, medicine and arithmetic.

Since Pythagoras left Greece, there have been great changes. The best minds, fleeing the Persian yoke, moved to southern Italy, which was then called Great Greece, and founded the colonial cities of Syracuse, Agrigent, Croton there. Returning to Greece around 530 BC. e., it was in Croton that Pythagoras created his own philosophical school. The great initiate gathered around him a group of devoted disciples.

In this society, or the Pythagorean school, the sciences, especially arithmetic, geometry, and astronomy, were studied, and the most important discoveries were made. Pythagoras combined the best of different religions and beliefs, created his own system, the defining thesis of which was the belief in the indissoluble interconnection of all things (nature, man, cosmos) and in the equality of all people in the face of eternity and nature.

Pythagoras and his followers laid the foundation for number theory with their work. The Pythagoreans divided them into many categories. According to one of them, they divided numbers into perfect and friendly numbers. Perfect numbers were called numbers equal to the sum of their divisors, friendly - numbers, each of which is the sum of its own divisors of another number. In ancient times, numbers of this kind symbolized friendship, hence the name.

In addition to the numbers that caused admiration and admiration, the Pythagoreans also had the so-called "bad" numbers. These are numbers that did not have any merit, and even worse if such a number was surrounded by "good" numbers. An example of this is the famous number thirteen - the devil's dozen or the number seventeen, which caused particular disgust among the Pythagoreans.

The attempt of Pythagoras and his students to connect the real world with numerical relations turned out to be successful, because in the process of studying this nature they also put forward rational ways of knowing the secrets of the Universe. The reduction of astronomy and music to numbers enabled later generations of scientists to understand the world even more deeply. It was Pythagoras who discovered that the musical intervals known to his time - the octave, fifth and fourth - can be expressed by the ratio between the numbers 1, 2, 3 and 4. But perhaps his most outstanding achievement is Digital Mysticism - the theory according to which numbers have instinctive meaning and harmonious proportion.

Perfectly mastering the methods of the Egyptian priests, Pythagoras "purified the souls of his listeners, expelled vices from the heart and filled the minds with bright truth."

In the Golden Verses, Pythagoras expressed moral rules that had to be strictly followed. Pythagoras all his life miraculously neglected the laws of nature, filled with physical strength. When he was about 60 years old, he married his student Theano, and they had seven children.

The wife of Pythagoras after his death continued to spread his teachings. And the disciples settled in different cities of Magna Graecia and organized Pythagorean societies there.

flat numbers, can be depicted and represented as a product of two factors (for example, the number 6);

body numbers, which can be expressed as a product of three factors;

triangular numbers, which can be represented by triangles (3, 6, 9);

square numbers, which can be represented by squares (4, 16);

pentagonal numbers, which can be represented by pentagons (5, 12, 22).

The ancient philosopher Plato, who supported the theory of Pythagoras, believed that numbers, understood as having geometric structural properties (square, pentagonal, triangular), occupy a middle position between things and ideas.

Monad and One

In the Pythagorean tradition such concepts as the monad and the unity were very important. According to Pythagoreanism, monad- a noble number that can be compared with the seed of a tree with many branches (other numbers that subsequently grew from one). Also, a monad is represented as the sum of any combination of numbers, considered as a whole, therefore, both the entire Universe and its individual parts can be considered a monad.

Even and odd numbers

The Pythagoreans divided all numbers into two categories - even and odd, which is also characteristic of some other ancient civilizations.

Later it turned out that the Pythagorean "even - odd" and "right - left" have deep and interesting consequences in quartz crystals, in the structure of viruses and DNA, in Pasteur's famous experiments with the polarization of tartaric acid, in violation of the parity of elementary particles and other theories.

Evenness and oddness were understood by the Pythagoreans as signs related to divisibility, as well as to the feminine and masculine principles. Even and odd were very important concepts for the Pythagoreans, and they included this binary opposition, along with other pairs (male - female, right - left, light - dark, limiting - limitless, good - evil), in a list of ten pairs of opposites, which they considered the beginning of all things.

Any even number can always be divided into two even or odd parts, but an odd number can never be: in any division, one part will always be even and the other odd. Since the property of division metaphorically corresponds to the property of manifestation, the divisibility of odd numbers did not imply the fragmentation of the very basis of numbers - unity. The Pythagoreans believed that it combines male and female attributes, because when you add one to an even (negative) number, you get an odd (positive) number, and when you add one to an odd number, it turns into an even one, and thus, the male number becomes female.

According to the Pythagorean definition, a number is a set made up of units. Later, developing these ideas, Aristotle argued that "a point is a unit having position, a unit is a point without position." That is why the followers of Pythagoreanism defined the unit as “the boundary between number and parts”, that is, between integers and fractions, although they saw in the unit a potentially indivisible, “eternal root of being”, a kind of numerical atom. All other numbers are connected with the unit by indissoluble and mysterious bonds.

Even numbers start with two, odd numbers start with three and are masculine.

The Pythagoreans operated on numbers with the help of pebbles. Each number corresponded to its own pebble - calculus (the modern name "calculator" came from this word). The pebbles were laid out on a board called an abacus. At first, the count was made in the mind, and then the numbers began to be recorded in writing. Operations with numbers were called numbering, which subsequently spread in its two varieties - Attic and Ionian. The multiplication table, written in the Ionian key, has survived to this day, which, in addition to its main function, was an illustration of such a property of numbers as their proportionality.

The doctrine of proportions was an important property of the Pythagorean system. By proportions, the Pythagoreans understood the equality of relations between measured quantities. The main property of proportions was that the product of the middle terms of the proportion is always equal to the product of its extreme terms.

Proportions were subdivided into arithmetic, geometric, harmonic (musical) and continuous (that is, those in which the middle members coincided).

One of the most striking proportions discovered by the Pythagoreans was subsequently named by Leonardo da Vinci the "golden section", who tried to embody its principle in his numerous inventions. The principle of the "golden section" was used in ancient architecture.

The Pythagoreans created a theory of music (we have already mentioned the theory in previous chapters), in which new proportions of a purely sound plane were revealed.

The fundamentals of the theory are various concepts (gamma, interval, consonance, tonic, mode, musical scale), but the Pythagoreans were most interested in the musical scale, which mathematically expresses the principle of harmony in the system of pitch relations.

According to one legend, Pythagoras found harmonic numbers, the ratio of which gives rise to the music of the spheres. Camille Flammarion recounted this legend as follows: “They say that, passing by a forge, he heard the sound of hammers, which accurately conveyed musical harmonies. He ordered the hammers to be weighed; it turned out that of the two hammers, which were an octave apart, one weighed twice as much as the other; that of the two, who were a fifth apart, one weighed three times the other; and for a distance of a quart, one weighed four times the other. It was easy to make similar calculations for thirds, tones and semitones. After experiments on hammers, they made an experiment on a string stretched with weights. It turned out that when a string made some kind of sound at a certain weight of the weight, then to increase this sound by an octave, the weight of the weight was required twice as much; for a fifth, only a third more; for a fourth, a quarter; for a tone, one eighth; for a semitone, one eighteenth or so. Or to put it more simply: they pulled a string, which, for all its length, made some kind of sound; compressed in the middle, it gave an octave from the original sound; on one third of the length - a fifth, on a quarter - a quart, on the eighth share of the length - a tone, on the eighteenth - a semitone.

Since the ancients determined the Soul by movement, the amount of movement should have served for them as a measure of the amount of the Soul.

The followers of Pythagoras understood by music not only the sounds extracted from the monochord, then a popular one-string musical instrument of the ancient Greeks, but also the sound of cosmic bodies, the singing of the luminaries, which they perceived not metaphorically, but really.

H. P. Blavatsky gave an idea of ​​the cosmic octave of the Pythagorean music of the spheres as follows: “It was on the number seven that Pythagoras based his doctrine of Harmony and the Music of the Spheres, calling the distance of the Moon from the Earth “tone”; from the Moon to Mercury - in half a tone, as well as from Mercury to Venus; from Venus to the Sun - one and a half tones; from the Sun to Mars - tone; from Mars to Jupiter - half a tone; from Jupiter to Saturn - half a tone and from Saturn to the zodiac - one tone; which is seven tones - the range of harmony. The whole melody of Nature lies in these tones and therefore is called the “Voice of Nature”.

The musical theory of the Pythagoreans was based on the clear belief that the universe was arranged in an orderly and symmetrical manner. That is why the word Cosmos, which in Ancient Greece called the Universe, meant order, order, harmony, aesthetically designed organization of the universe.

Imperfect, perfect and superperfect numbers

By quality, the Pythagoreans divided numbers into three main categories - imperfect, perfect, superperfect. To determine which category a particular number belongs to, they broke it into parts included in the first ten and into the whole itself, so that the result was not fractions, but whole parts.

To imperfect numbers were assigned whose sum of parts was less than the whole. An example of such a number is the number 8, since its half is a four, one quarter is a two, and one eighth is a unit, in total they give the number seven.

Perfect numbers were counted whose sum of parts equaled the whole. Six was considered the first perfect number, since half of it is three, one third is two, one sixth is one, in total they make up the whole number six.

Types of numbers in science and esotericism

Pythagorean numerology has had a significant impact on the presentation of later teachings that consider numerical symbolism.

The sacred nature of numbers can be more deeply understood if we consider them not only from an esoteric position, but also from the perspective of ordinary science.

The Big Encyclopedic Dictionary says: “Number, one of the basic concepts of mathematics; originated in ancient times and gradually expanded and generalized. In connection with the counting of individual objects, the concept of positive integer (natural) numbers arose, and then the idea of ​​the infinity of the natural series of numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4 ... The tasks of measuring lengths, areas, as well as highlighting the shares of named quantities led to the concept of rational (fractional) number. The concept of a negative number arose among the Indians in the 6th-11th centuries. The need for an exact expression of ratios of quantities (for example, the ratio of the diagonal of a square to its side) led to the introduction of irrational numbers, which are expressed in terms of rational numbers only approximately; rational and irrational numbers make up the set of real numbers. The theory of real numbers received its final development only in the second half of the 19th century, in connection with the needs of mathematical analysis. In connection with the solution of quadratic and cubic equations in the XVI century. complex numbers have been introduced.

So, mathematics divides numbers into several groups or varieties, but we will try to consider each of them from a metaphysical point of view.

It is known that real numbers represent the union of the set of rational and the set of irrational numbers. A real number can be any positive or negative number, or zero. From a metaphysical point of view, this group of numbers corresponds to the material material plane of being and is a sign of quantity. With the help of real numbers, measurements of all physical quantities are expressed.

Rational numbers can be represented as an infinite decimal. The sum, difference, product, and quotient of rational numbers are also considered rational. Rational numbers include whole numbers, fractional numbers, positive numbers, negative numbers, and even zero. From a metaphysical point of view, rational numbers refer to those quantities that can be measured with certainty and precision.

Irrational numbers refer to the group of real numbers that can be expressed in the form of an infinite decimal non-periodic fraction. Metaphysicians attribute irrational numbers to the realm of those elusive phenomena of the subtle world that cannot be measured with absolute accuracy.

Real numbers are considered a kind complex numbers, which include numbers of the form x + iy, where x and y are real numbers, i is an imaginary unit (a number whose square is -1); for x = 0 the complex numbers are called purely imaginary. In metaphysics, complex numbers are such quantities that carry a sacred plan.

Numbers are also subdivided into positive, which include real numbers greater than 0, and negative numbers, opposite to positive ones, are less than 0.

From a metaphysical point of view, all positive numbers refer to the physical world, and negative numbers to the subtle plane of being, that is, to the astral-mental area.

P. D. Uspensky divides mathematics as a science of numbers into two types:

1) mathematics of finite and constant values, which is an artificial discipline created to solve specific problems on conditional data;

2) mathematics of infinite and variable quantities, which is a more accurate knowledge of the real world.

Examples of mathematics of the second type that violate the artificial axioms of mathematics of the first type are the so-called "transfinite numbers" that lie beyond infinity.

Pythagorean meaning of numbers

In numerology, zero is not a number and does not belong to the world of numbers, but it is the source of all numbers, understood as separate from a single base of power, belonging to another indivisible dimension.

If zero occurs in numerological analysis, it is simply crossed out and excluded from the sum, since it does not have any effect on the final figure.

For example:

3 + 9 + 1 = 13 = 1 + 3 = 4; 30 + 9 + 10 = 49 = 4 + 9 = 13 = 1 + 3 = 4.

Zero contains all numbers as a potential possibility of a part to separate from the whole. It symbolizes the Absolute, which combines Spirit and Matter, and represents a comprehensive circle with an infinite radius and circumference. The first thing that should emerge from the circle is the unit, which is the vertically drawn diameter. This once again confirms the idea that the basis of the Universe is a number. The universe is built on the principle of strict harmony, subject to mathematical laws. The absolute status of zero is also manifested in its relationship with other numbers: its addition to other numbers on the right increases the number by one order, but if multiplied or divided by zero, then it dissolves any number until it is completely destroyed. In this, the supreme, controlling function is manifested, as a symbol of the Absolute in relation to other numbers that originated from zero.

Zero is a secret of secrets, a symbol of the unmanifested world, a synthesis of infinite space and eternal time, the symbolism of all potential, unmanifested, latent. Zero can be considered an “Orphic egg”, personifying the Beginning of all things, staying in a dream and generating a point (one), from which all other numbers arise. One reflects the opposite of zero.

Zero is a symbol of the spirit, the Divine essence, acting in matter.

Number 1 (monad)

Number 1 is ruled by the Sun.

According to Pythagoras, the number 1 is called a monad. This is a symbol of wisdom.

Attributes of the monad: hermaphrodite, God, receptacle of matter, chaos, darkness, Tower, Throne of Jupiter.

The unit is the home. This is the First Cause, Creation, God, the masculine principle. It is the basis of all numbers and the basis of life.
