Paper is not a weapon - in its usual form. But thin paper strips 27 cm long and a few centimeters wide can turn into weapons if a thin layer of aluminum is sprayed on both sides.

Accumulations of such bands reflect electromagnetic impulses with a wavelength of 2.4 meters, that is, exactly at the frequency on which the early detection radars of the Freya model (Freya) of the German Luftwaffe operated in World War II. The paper treated in this way was an ideal tool for disorienting enemy reconnaissance: a couple of hundred stripes reflected impulses in the same way as heavy bomber. It was a real secret weapon - unexpected and highly effective.

But he had one important drawback: as soon as paper strips were used for the first time, they ceased to be a secret. Indeed, from the copies dropped in mass quantities, several pieces fell into the hands of the German occupation authorities or local services of the Wehrmacht on the very first day. It was not difficult for Luftwaffe specialists to understand the principle of their operation.

Therefore, the command of the Royal air force(Royal Air Force/RAF) for a long time he did not dare to launch this innovation, protected by the code name "Window" (Window). They decided that if they do it, then only when it comes to a really big goal. For example, about the second largest city in Germany.

At the end of July 1943, the hour arrived. Hamburg was one of the main targets of the RAF Bomber Command. Berlin and the Ruhr area had already been heavily bombed with devastating destruction. Now it is the turn of the most important port of the Third Reich.

In accordance with the "Casablanca Directive", adopted at a meeting between US President Franklin D. Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in the Moroccan city of Casablanca in early 1943, the main task was to be "progressively increasing destruction and disorganization of the military, industrial and economic system Germany", as well as "undermining the morale of the German people to such an extent that their capacity for armed resistance is mortally weakened."

In the raid on Hamburg, these two goals were almost perfectly combined: the city with a population of 1.6 million at that time was, on the one hand, a large industrial center with great value for the German military industry, on the other hand, was not a stronghold of the National Socialists, as the results of the elections up to 1932 convincingly testified to.

If this city were largely destroyed, it would have a multiple effect, the RAF hoped: firstly, the military production and supply of the Wehrmacht would be damaged; secondly, the removal of even the largest destruction will tie up the resources of the regime, which therefore cannot be used elsewhere; thirdly, there is the prospect that the population will rise up against the NSDAP.

Such, in any case, was the calculation of the military planners who worked around the clock in High Wycombe, a town 50 kilometers west of London, on the appropriate strategies. Bomber Command considered the middle of summer to be the most suitable moment for the raid.

On Saturday, July 24, 1943, that moment arrived. At about 11 p.m. radio in Northern Germany announced: "Large enemy formations on approach to Helgoland Bight." However, many of the radar echoes were in fact reflections from "windows" - aluminum-coated paper strips first used over Europe.

This was the first of five night air raids carried out before 4 August 1943. They were supplemented by two daytime bombing by the US Air Force. As a result, the port city of Hamburg survived the heaviest air raids hit by any city in the world so far. The operation was codenamed "Gomorrah", and the result corresponded to this biblical prototype: about 40 thousand people died, 280 thousand apartments were destroyed.

Since the beginning of the war, this Hanseatic city has been hit by air raids 137 times, they cost the lives of 1,500 people, 25,000 inhabitants lost their roof over their heads. But now the nightmare has taken on a new dimension.

On the first night, 791 British bombers dropped their deadly cargo over the city, while suffering almost no damage from a completely disoriented German air defense. Then, during the work that had begun on the dismantling of the ruins, the first daytime raid was carried out - on the afternoon of July 25, 1943, approximately 100 American bombers attacked the city. After 20 hours, another 71 American bombers raided the port of Hamburg, at night of the same day, several British high-speed bombers, also under the protection and support of Windows, attacked the city to create panic among the population.

But Hamburg still had to experience the peak of the disaster: on the night of July 27-28, 1943, 739 British four-engine bombers dropped their cargo over areas of the city east of the center. Because of the fires that arose there, a devastating fiery tornado formed - for the first time during the war in a large German city. hurricane wind spread the flames throughout the neighborhoods. The districts of Rothenburgsort, Hammerbrook and Borgfelde were completely destroyed, and in Eilbeek, Barmbek and Wandsbek, only bare walls remained in many streets.

For the remaining two war years, the destroyed Hamburg was only a burden for Nazi Germany. "A series of such raids, if they were extended to six more large cities," said Hitler's armaments minister Albert Speer, "would paralyze the German war industry."

What happened to Windows? When, during July 25, 1943, several copies of this secret weapon fell into the hands of Luftwaffe experts, they immediately understood what in question. Because under the code name "Düppel" (Düppel), the scientists of Hermann Göring themselves experimented since 1941 with strips of steel to interfere with radars. But in order not to reveal the secret of the weapon to the enemy, it was not used.

Every self-respecting country that wants to have weight on the world stage spends almost the lion's share of its budget on the development of the military-industrial complex. Target factories are being built, new ultra-modern types of weapons are being developed. However, it is effective to destroy fighting forces the enemy can be done in another way - using makeshift weapons. This, of course, is not as efficient, but it works fine in conditions guerrilla war. And it's about makeshift weapons we'll talk today.

1. Pit trap

Perhaps the most primitive example of homemade weapons. The soldier does not see the pit, falls into it, runs into stakes or spikes, loses combat effectiveness. What could be easier? Even ancient and primitive hunters used pit traps for hunting wild and large animals. That's just people are much smarter than animals, so main problem is an effective masking of such holes. The best example of a tactic for using this makeshift weapons showed us.

For those who are not in the know - the Vietnam War, in which licensed peddlers of democracy sucked on a large scale from the semi-savage Vietnamese people, partially sponsored Soviet Union. The very conditions of Vietnam completely leveled the fierce superiority of the democrats in armored vehicles and aviation, and the American infantry, as you know, sucks without support. And then she sucked especially hard - the jungle, high humidity, regular flooding of the territory, tropical diseases, mosquitoes, poor mobility - all this played against them. And then there are the vicious Vietnamese, to whom "democracy" did not give up at all and who made life difficult for the American army with all their might. And it's not even about classic guerrilla tactics, speech and "quiet" war.

The fact is that digging holes in the ground, sticking them with stakes smeared, excuse me, with shit, and waiting for the water to fill them by itself is as easy as shelling pears. And the soldier, who is blindly wandering along the half-flooded path discovered with such difficulty, will obviously not be happy to fail and run into these surprises with all his weight. There is also a complicated version - in addition to the stakes, spikes were installed on the sides on the bottom, directed diagonally downwards. If a soldier tried to pull his leg out, he also ran into these spikes. And a very difficult option - two logs studded with nails. The soldier steps on their junction, falls down, the drums rotate, the nails are stuck ...

2. Molotov cocktail

it improvised weapon has already become a classic for most modern riots. And all because it is extremely simple.

First before this effective remedy the destruction of manpower and armored vehicles was thought up by hot Finnish guys during the Soviet-Finnish war of 1939-1940. And it was they who called these cute bottles “Molotov Cocktail”, since Comrade Molotov was at that time the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the USSR and was, in principle, responsible for starting the war.

However, this has makeshift weapons and obvious shortcomings. The first and main one is that a rag on fire unmasks a fighter, putting his life at risk. The solution was found with the help of chemistry - a mixture of some chemical substances ignite on contact with air, so they began to simply put the ampoule with reagents into bottles with Molotov cocktail.

3. Samopal

Or in other words - homemade firearms . To be honest, it deserves a separate article - so many different options were invented, created and tested by local "Kulibins" of various nationalities. So for the time being, we will focus on the simplest option - an “ignition” self-propelled gun.

According to modern weapons classification, this is a single-shot ramrod-type pistol. That is, the charge and the bullet are laid from the muzzle. On the opposite side, respectively, there is an igniter hole. A metal tube acts as a barrel, which is attached to an impromptu butt. Direct ignition of the charge is carried out either manually or using a trigger.

Despite the extremely simple principle, this improvised weapon pretty efficient. From close range, it can even kill, especially if you get into any vital organ.

4. Rocket Kassam

it improvised weapon- in fact, a solid-propellant unguided ground-to-ground missile. Until now, it is actively produced on the territory of the Gaza Strip with the aim of shelling the territory of Israel.

The point is simple. The most simple and affordable ingredients are taken, which we will not list here, but which can be found in any agricultural or hardware store. All this is combined in the right proportions, and then a homemade rocket is installed on launcher and launched in the direction of the enemy.

Between 2001 and 2012, 27 people were officially killed, and another 700 were injured of varying severity. Actually, this is not an attacking weapon - low accuracy, low explosive power and heavy weight make it ineffective in active combat operations. But as a weapon of terror - that's it. Produced literally on the knee, inexpensive, inconspicuous. And not so long ago, a Palestinian garbage truck was detained in the Gaza Strip, converted into a system salvo fire with the help of Kassam. No, this is really brilliant - you can quietly move around the territory, prepare a volley in a matter of minutes, shoot and just as quietly hide. In short, simple and effective in its own way improvised weapon.

5. "Shushpanzers"

Under this funny name, which originated in 2007 on thematic forums dedicated to military equipment, hides any modern vehicle, covered with makeshift armor. Wherever it was not used - and during the Second World War, when the USSR had huge problems with armored vehicles, so armor and weapons were even put on tractors, and during the first Arab-Israeli conflict, when the Jews did not yet have their own Merkav, and on eastern Ukraine, and on both sides of the conflict.

And all because this makeshift weapons extremely simple principle. A powerful wheelbase is taken (a truck, a tractor, anything that can carry a lot of weight) and sheathed with thick metal sheets. The thicker, the more reliable. Actually, everything. From shrapnel and bullets improvised weapon protect, the soldier will deliver to the destination. And if you install a machine gun, then it will cover it with fire. In a word, simple and effective.
