It is impossible to imagine learning English without getting to know the names of animals. After getting acquainted with the minimum of vocabulary and the simplest grammatical constructions, it is necessary to move on to small texts in which the presence of animals as characters is highly desirable. When we teach animals in English for children, the traditional set includes approximately equal parts of domestic and wild fauna. It is better to start memorizing with one-syllable words, gradually moving on to two-syllable and three-syllable names.

Animal names in English

At the very beginning of training, it is permissible when animals in English are learned with pronunciation in Russian, that is, with Russian transcription. It is strongly recommended that, in parallel with memorizing words, learn English transcription signs, without knowing which it will be impossible to work with any dictionary.

Going to the animals section in English with a translation into Russian, it is very important for the child to explain that the British not only call animals “not in our way”, but also hear most of the sounds they make, not like we do. For example, an English dog barks "bow-bow" or "woof-woof", chicken quack "cluck-cluck", the mouse squeaks "squeak-squeak" and the sheep bleats "baa-baa".

It is useful to introduce these sounds with the help of such suggestions:

  • The pig on the farm goes “oink-oink”.
  • The horse on the field goes “neigh-neigh”.
  • The cow on the meadow says “moo-moo”.

Children notice that native speakers hear some animals in a very peculiar way, and, for example, the mooing of a cow or the meowing of a cat is reproduced by our speech apparatus in approximately the same way.

It is also useful to write dialogues like this:

  • - What does the cat say on the roof?
  • It says “miaow”.

Or a little more complicated:

  • - Does the duck in the pool say “oink-oink”?
  • No, it isn't. The duck says “quack-quack”.

He, she or it?

When learning the names of wild animals, there is no special need to reproduce sounds, maybe with the exception of snakes (hiss). It should be noted that in everyday situations and in real life pronouns he and she are not used for animals. In most cases, you need to use the pronoun it used when referring to inanimate objects. For example:

This is a crocodile. It is green long and fierce.

Here in fairy tales and in some stories, animals are personified and "rewarded" with the pronouns he or she. Also in English there is one very interesting feature: when you are told about any animal that has a nickname or name (in fairy tales), it is "represented" as follows:

John, the Cat
Grey, the Horse
Martin, the Bear.

smart as a monkey

Also, as in Russian, animals among the British or Americans are endowed with qualities that are inherent in some people. In some cases, these comparisons coincide with ours, when they say about a person that he has the strength and endurance of a horse. For example:

Dick was strong as a horse and he could easily make fifteen kilometers on foot.

On the other hand, when we teach animals in English for children, they need to be taught that we and native English speakers have differences in mentality, and therefore we perceive many realities of life in different ways. In the field of the animal world, this is especially pronounced in relation to wolves and monkeys. Yes, in some fairy tales we treat the wolf with disdain, but we will never compare a man to a wolf in the following way:

"He's dumb as a wolf", and English speakers do it: "Brian's as stupid as a wolf".

Even more curious is the attitude of the British towards monkeys. If we say that a person is smart like a monkey, most likely, he will take it as an insult, and for native speakers, this is just the highest praise:

"Tracy has finished her school with honors - she's as clever as a monkey".

As a rule, such transfers of human characters to animals in literature can be found in fables. The actors there are usually various animals. Reading fables in English is one of the ways to replenish your vocabulary, there you will find many names of animals, words that describe character and behavior. There is usually a moral at the end of each fable. From these final sentences characterizing different life situations, you can take a lot of useful things to enrich your speech.

On the training site, in addition to short funny stories, interesting stories and fairy tales, English fables are also used to learn English. On our site, a user with any initial level of knowledge will find suitable educational material for himself.

What topic do you have the most books on? Not because you collect a collection, like I do whales, for example, but it just happened that way. So to speak, hidden thrust =))). I was recently sorting through books and discovered that our bookshelves are literally crawling with crocodiles! And that's just those books about crocodiles that came into my field of vision.

Welcome to the swamp, my dears.

The Selfish Crocodile is not only a story about a crocodile. There are 4 stories about animals in a thick monumental book with a magnet cover. Stories are great for small theatrical productions. The fairy tale about the crocodile has the same plot as Ma-tari-kari, but the role of the savior is a mouse.

The Enormous Crocodile by Roald Dahl is one of Dahl's favorite works, suitable for Cyrus in age. Of particular delight is, of course, the dialogue about how to properly eat children so that they do not get stuck in their teeth. To be honest, I was hoping to leave Dahl to read on my own, but I couldn't resist. I really want to read this humorous story with a tragic end with expression, without slipping ...

I, Crocodile by Fred Marcellino is one of my favorite books, there was a whole post about it somewhere. This work was not treated very well when translated into Russian, although it was translated by an excellent specialist. Therefore, if this touching and cunning crocodile face looked to you, I beg you, only the original !!! Only in it is the author's humor, soft sarcasm and an amazing atmosphere surrounding the first crocodile in Paris!

There Is A Crocodile Under My Bed by Ingrid and Dieter Schubert is a classic-preclassic story that first saw the light of day in 1980. Since then, the idea has been repeated by the authors themselves, and Mercy Mayer, and, I think, by someone else. Little Peggy doesn't want to sleep because under her bed is... a crocodile. And the parents skimp on their duties and are not even going to read to her at night, cheerfully going out. There really was a crocodile under the bed, so Peggy had a lot of fun without her parents. It turned out, by the way, that I am a hypocrite, and in the book I do not approve of mom in a combination, dad in a slipped sock and shorts, but with a tie, and a lot of bare-assed girls ... This, of course, was almost 40 years ago, but it seems to me that The book was not republished precisely because of incorrect illustrations.

Open Very Carefully by Nicola O'Byrne is a great book about a lost crocodile.

I already did it, and at the same time I photographed the QR code with reading. Should work for everyone =) The crocodile got into a book about the ugly duckling, smashed everything there, ate the letters, ate the cover and ran away. Where he is hiding is unknown.

Could A Crocodile Play Basketball is not a book, but a find. Very cheerfully and unobtrusively, the author introduces us to interesting facts from the life of crocodiles. The story is built around questions and answers. Can a crocodile play snowballs? What will he do if he loses a tooth? Would you like to play with teddy bears? And the author has scientifically substantiated answers to all these questions =))). We love this series of books, thanks to QED Publishing!

How we got this dominance of crocodiles, I'll never know. What do you think, what is the reason for this???

How to write short story about my favorite animal? It's very simple. In this article, you will find several examples of such stories about both pets and wild animals from the forest. You yourself can make up any such story using a simple scheme: first you name this animal, then describe its appearance, which is typical for it (for example, long ears, short tail, beautiful fur, smart eyes - everything that seems to you characteristic of this animal).

Then describe a little of its habits, what it can do, how it helps people, or how you take care of it, how this animal plays, where it lives, what its favorite food is, and so on. At the end, you can write a short conclusion about why you like this animal. The main thing you may need is a stock of adjectives about animals, the ability to use verbs in, and you can check the correct spelling of your essay for free on the website: www.paperrater.com.

Crocodiles are creatures like no other. Leading a predominantly aquatic lifestyle, they, however, cannot breathe underwater, and they prefer to hunt land animals. In the wild, crocodiles are extremely dangerous - for example, in the sparsely populated areas of Australia where they are found, you can often find signs warning about the presence of these reptiles in the vicinity. This precaution is very appropriate - crocodiles are usually not averse to having a snack on a gaping tourist.

  1. Crocodiles are often confused with alligators. However, these are different animals, albeit similar ones.
  2. Crocodiles are direct descendants of extinct dinosaurs.
  3. The closest relatives of crocodiles are, oddly enough, birds (see x).
  4. Crocodiles are very cunning and patient. Noticing the place where herbivores come to drink, crocodiles pour water on the shore in this place, transferring it in their mouths so that the earth becomes slippery. If an animal approaching the water to get drunk slips, it will inevitably become a victim of a crocodile. From this fact, perhaps, the expression "crocodile tears" came from.
  5. When the fish goes to spawn, the crocodiles in the rivers lie down against the current and open their mouths. They don’t even have to do anything - just close their mouths and swallow the fish that jumps into it.
  6. Crocodiles, unlike alligators, can live not only in fresh water, but also in salt water.
  7. The ribs protecting the crocodile's belly are not connected to the spine.
  8. If something falls on the tongue of a crocodile, for example, a drop of water, or a drop of sweat from the head of a brave trainer who puts his head into the mouth of a predator, the crocodile immediately clenches its jaws, because it triggers a reflex.
  9. A well-fed, full-fed crocodile does not attack a potential victim even when success is almost assured to him - he is simply too lazy.
  10. Crocodile teeth are ground down and replaced with new ones about once every two years.
  11. Aquatic crocodiles, however, lay their eggs on land.
  12. Water colder than plus 20 degrees Celsius is deadly for most crocodiles.
  13. Crocodiles have developed a kind of symbiosis with birds - it opens its mouth, and small birds peck out pieces of meat stuck between its teeth. The crocodile never touches these birds.
  14. The apparent clumsiness of crocodiles on land is very deceiving - at short distances they are able to develop very high speed, all the more surprising for creatures with such short legs.
  15. In the foreseeable past in the territory South America there were still completely land-based crocodiles, but now they are no longer left - they have died out.
  16. Crocodiles reach maturity at the age of 5-10 years, depending on the species. More large species grow more slowly.
  17. Crocodiles can live for hundreds of years, sometimes even more.
  18. Crocodiles do not know how to chew - their jaws are not adapted for this, so they tear their prey apart and swallow it in pieces.
  19. Among many species of crocodiles, there are manifestations of cannibalism. Yes, on occasion, these predators are not averse to snacking on each other.
  20. The Nile crocodile, which, as the name implies, is found in the Nile River, poses a considerable threat to the inhabitants of the countryside in the vicinity of this great river (see).
  21. If necessary, a crocodile that has accumulated a sufficient fat reserve may not eat at all for a whole year, or even more.
  22. Some crocodiles hibernate for a period of drought and hide at the bottom of shallowed reservoirs.
  23. In one sitting, the crocodile easily eats prey equal to one-fifth of its own body weight.
  24. Small crocodiles from one clutch of eggs hatch at the same time. Interesting fact- if the eggs were stored at a temperature of 31-33 degrees Celsius, then males will hatch from them. If the temperature was lower or higher, then the females will hatch.
  25. In the Kingdom of Thailand, there are special farms where crocodiles are grown.
  26. Crocodiles are one of the most ancient creatures on Earth. Them modern views appeared about 83 million years ago, and their ancestors - a quarter of a billion years ago.
  27. The largest crocodiles can reach a length of 7 meters and a weight of one ton. You can meet such a monster in the north of Australia, in India and Fiji (see).
  28. Crocodiles swim at speeds up to 40 km / h, plus or minus. If they want, of course.
  29. Different muscles are responsible for opening and closing the mouth of crocodiles. Those that close their jaws are very strong, and those that open are the opposite, so an adult may well prevent the crocodile from opening its mouth, holding it tightly with his hands.
  30. Crocodiles sometimes swallow stones. They help them grind food in the stomach, and at the same time play the role of ballast.
