First you need to find a lizard. It is best to ask your friends in what places they met lizards most often, since their habitats are very extensive. However, this fact allows you to meet lizards in the most unexpected places.

2 step

When a lizard is found, do not rush. Usually lizards do not run away immediately, but first freeze. Examine the area around it, it is best to try to drive the lizard to an open area where there is no way for it to hide. To do this, move your hand to the lizard above the ground from the unfavorable side - this will make the lizard run in the direction you need. Usually the lizard fights off a little and freezes again. If she ran back more than a meter, see if there are shelters in her way. If yes, then try to grab it from behind (during the run, the lizards hardly follow you). If there are no shelters, then follow her, she will stop soon. Be careful, lizards like to hide in holes and cracks in the ground, which are almost invisible in the grass or tree roots. Sometimes it makes sense to deliberately drive a lizard into cover. I once saw a lizard trying to hide under 3 rocks. Once the lizard has run into cover, it won't move even if you stick your hand out. The main thing is not to destroy her shelter, then the lizard can simply be taken without any attempts to escape on her part.

3 step

When the lizard is in the open, you need to go behind it. It is best to throw a larger object on top. Make sure that it fits snugly to the ground, do not leave gaps. You need to throw it on top and slightly forward in the direction of the lizard's muzzle (but so that it covers it, and not in front of it). Then carefully stick your hand in, trying to make the gaps as small as possible and grab the lizard. DO NOT grab the lizards by the tail!!! Most know how to throw it away! If there is nothing suitable at hand, then grab the lizard with your hand. Carefully approach so far that you can not only reach the lizard, but also have a range of 15 - 20 cm of your arm. It is best to lean forward (the lizard looks at your legs and not up). The movement must be fast. The arm should be brought behind the lizard at about 20 to 30 degrees to the ground, decreasing this angle as the arm is extended (expect the angle to be 0 degrees when the arm is fully extended and 3 to 5 cm above the ground). It is necessary to grab not the lizard itself, but, as it were, the space in front of it. Be prepared that when your hand is about 10 cm from the lizard, it will run. Also be prepared for the lizard to change direction when your hand begins to overtake it a little. So you need to grab the lizard until this moment.

A person and his house at any time can become a victim of an attack by various pests. Annoying insects quite often become an irritant for a person, penetrating into his home. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to prevent pests from doing this, so if they appear, efforts will need to be made to eradicate them.

To destroy insects, you can use the means available in the markets and in stores that are intended for this. True, one will have to face the fact that they may have a certain harm to health due to its chemical components, but it is not big problem, since you can always process the premises, and then simply do not go there.

There are a number and folk remedies proven over the years. You can use them. They do not have any impact on the health of others, as they do not contain chemicals. Unfortunately, they are not always as effective as chemicals protection.

A lizard is an animal that belongs to the class of reptiles (reptiles), the squamous order, the lizard suborder. In Latin, the suborder of the lizard is called Lacertilia, formerly the name was Sauria.

The reptile got its name from the word “lizard”, which comes from the Old Russian word “skor”, meaning “skin”.

The smallest lizard in the world

The smallest lizards in the world are the Haraguan sphero (Sphaerodactylus ariasae) and the Virginian round-toed gecko (Sphaerodactylus parthenopion). The size of the babies does not exceed 16-19 mm, and the weight reaches 0.2 grams. These cute and harmless reptiles live in the Dominican Republic and the Virgin Islands.

Where do lizards live?

A variety of species of lizards live on all continents except Antarctica. Representatives of reptiles familiar to Russia are real lizards that live almost everywhere: they can be found in the fields, in the forest, in the steppes, gardens, in the mountains, deserts, near rivers and lakes. All types of lizards move perfectly on any surface, firmly clinging to all sorts of bulges and bumps. Rocky species of lizards are excellent jumpers, the height of the jump of these mountain dwellers reaches 4 meters.

large predators, such as monitor lizard, hunt small animals - snakes, their own kind, and also eat eggs of birds and reptiles with pleasure. The monitor lizard from Komodo Island, the largest lizard in the world, attacks wild boars and even buffalo and deer. The Moloch lizard eats exclusively, while the pink-tongued skink eats only terrestrial molluscs. Some large iguana and skink lizards are almost entirely vegetarian, with a menu of ripe fruits, leaves, flowers, and plant pollen.

Lizards in nature are extremely cautious and agile, approaching the intended prey stealthily, and then attack with a swift jerk and capture the prey in their mouths.

Catching lizards, watching them and releasing them can be difficult, but after some skills have been developed, it becomes available to anyone.

  • Be careful when holding a lizard - they are very fragile.
  • Do not crush the lizards in your own eagerness to grab them. Lizards are a very valuable part of nature, they eat a lot of insects near our homes.
  • Sneak up unnoticed, with slow movements. If you have the opportunity, download the sounds of lizards, this will help you when catching them.
  • Remove everything that can be removed so that the lizards have nowhere to hide.
  • Look for places where lizards hunt or where they bask in the sun in cold weather or for other reasons.
  • Grab the lizards by the body gently but firmly. Many lizards can shed their limbs (especially their tails) in order to escape.
  • Be aware that many lizard species are endangered and may be legally protected. These may be just those lizards that are in demand in the pet market, for example, real chameleons. If in doubt, check with the environmental organization. Sometimes a permit is needed to capture, keep and export a lizard. Such permission can be obtained fairly easily, depending on the species and level of threat of extinction.
  • Be patient: if you see a lizard for the first time, then it most likely lives near you, and you will see it again.
  • Just like you, lizards enjoy a free life. Try to catch the lizard in a safe way and release it afterwards. After you've watched the lizard for a while and enjoyed its company, release it back into the wild where you caught it.

Warnings

  • Some lizards bite. Very few of them are poisonous, so study your prey, and respect dangerous species bypassing them.
  • Residences (burrows) of lizards can be occupied by a variety of creatures, including poisonous spiders, scorpions and beetles.

What will you need

  • Place for hunting. Lizards can be found in flower beds on balconies, gardens, sheds, and wood stacks, but you need to find a suitable, accessible location.
  • An insect net and a good flashlight can be very useful for catching timid lizards.

Reptile lovers often become owners of lizards different kind. These animals survive well at home and do not require particularly careful care. The main thing is not to forget them on time and feed them properly.

What to feed a lizard?

Lizards are cold-blooded animals, which we boldly classify as predators. The life of lizards at home is very different from the one they live in nature. But they are picky and unpretentious. If you don’t like to mess with your pet too often, but would like to have an interesting neighbor nearby, then buying a reptile is the best solution for you. These animals absolutely do not need to communicate with the owners, all they are interested in is a spacious aquarium, as close as possible to natural conditions habitation and constant availability of necessary food.

So, if you saw a lizard at your friends' house, most likely you will also want to become the owner of such an unusual and exotic animal. After all, a reptile is not a cat or a dog, which is found in every third neighbor.

In general, there are three groups of lizards:

  • carnivorous;
  • herbivorous;
  • omnivores.

Accordingly, the feeding ration should be compiled not only on the basis of individual characteristics animal, but and taking into account the species to which it belongs.

The nutrition of lizards in nature is made up of living beings, less often - plant foods. They love to eat different mammals, fish, amphibians, birds, snakes. As you can see, the food of lizards in natural conditions quite varied.

How many times a day or how often and what should you feed your pet? Newborns need to be fed using tweezers. Lizards in captivity need to be fed during their most active period (there are diurnal and nocturnal reptiles). Water is essential for these pets. They either lick it off the leaves or drink directly from the drinker.

Often people are interested in how long a reptile in a terrarium can live without food. After all, sometimes you have to leave, and there may be no one to look after the reptile. So, it should be taken into account that this animal is not like a domestic spider, which can sit without food for many days. Reptiles should eat several times a day (three in summer, two in winter). Cubs, and often adult lizards, are fed various top dressings and mixtures of self-preparation. As for plant food, reptiles can periodically consume the following:

  • greens (lettuce, parsley, spinach, clover);
  • cabbage;
  • broccoli;
  • zucchini;
  • apples and pears;
  • carrot;
  • citrus;
  • melon;
  • grape.

Inexperienced lizard breeders are interested in whether it is possible to feed their pets with maggot. Someone claims that it is possible, and someone advises to beware of this type of food. But, in general, live maggots are not very useful for lizards, but not every reptile will eat the dead ones.

Many people advise feeding reptiles with cottage cheese (low fat) from time to time. To do this, it is not necessary to put it in a feeder, but it would be better to scatter it around the aquarium or carefully spread it on stones. A kind of salad will also be useful for reptiles: finely chopped meat should be mixed with chopped cabbage, carrots, and other vegetables. All this is very rich in fiber, which is necessary for successful digestion.

As for insects, when it is warm, you can collect them yourself, but in the cold months it is better to buy them in pet stores. So at least you will be sure that the food is not poisoned, healthy and absolutely edible.

Another important question in feeding: what to do if the animal went on a hunger strike? Most likely, you should not panic, because sometimes lizards just decide to arrange for themselves fasting days. Perhaps you overfed your pet too much, and he decided to take a break. Observe the behavior, if the animal is as active as usual, drinking water, then everything is fine with him. But, if the lizard does not eat for a week, you need to consult a veterinarian.

What to feed an ordinary caught lizard?

Very often people leave at home to live a lizard caught in the forest or caught on the street. It will not be difficult to tame a wild reptile, because the animal simply will not have a choice. The main thing is to create comfortable living conditions for her and proper diet. Feeding a small lizard is not at all difficult, the main thing is to do it regularly (more than once a day).

If you caught a quick lizard, then know that in natural environment she eats spiders, grasshoppers, various insects, likes to use snakes. In captivity, lizards of this species eat flies, crickets, cockroaches, spiders, flour and earthworms without any problems. You can prepare nutrient mixtures from fruits, meat, vegetables. Even the most common reptile needs a balanced diet.

For the first time, try to feed the lizard caught in the country or caught in the field with plant food. It:

  • apples;
  • carrot;
  • occasionally potatoes;
  • grape;
  • cabbage and lettuce.

Give all the products mixed, after peeling them and washing them well. But don't get hung up on only plant foods, even if the lizard is a herbivore, from time to time she needs to eat insects, and a carnivore - plant foods.

In general, it is very interesting to keep a field, forest or street lizard at home. After all, you can catch it with your own hands, and without much difficulty. But it should be noted that field varieties of reptiles are not the best option for life in captivity. They will last a little longer only if they constantly have a variety of food. In their daily menu, be sure to include meat, crickets, mosquitoes, mixtures of fruits and vegetables, worms, cockroaches.

Viviparous reptiles definitely need live food. In their natural habitat, these animals feed on invertebrates; it happens that they can dine on their own offspring. Well, in captivity, they also require the usual food. For example, you can feed them cockroaches, the main thing is that these are not house neighbor cockroaches. After all, in this case, who will give you a guarantee that the insects are not poisoned? Breakfast with such food for your reptile may be the last.

Viviparous lizards love different insects, crickets, flour, earthworms, small snails, newborn mice.

Whatever species of lizard you keep in your home, remember that when creating a terrarium, it is very important to take care of the proper temperature. Read all the nuances that are necessary for the successful life of your pet. Special attention pay attention to the bedding in the aquarium, it should be comfortable and practical. Go to the vet once a year.

Choosing food for lizards

If you are lucky enough to become the owner of a lizard, then sooner or later you will definitely think about purchasing special food for reptiles. The pet store today has a fairly wide range, sometimes choose a quality one, and useful product really becomes a big problem. When choosing food, a lot depends on what exactly your pet prefers.

There are special mixtures for lizards that contain beneficial substances. But always purchase only natural mixtures, without additives. Do not forget that lizards have a very sensitive stomach, it is not yet known how they will react to chemical substances from store mixes.

Some owners understand that nothing can be more useful and enjoyable for a lizard than live food. For example, lizards will gratefully absorb snails, earthworms, fish, crickets, grasshoppers, some varieties of these reptiles willingly eat small rodents.

Before buying a lizard, you need to ask what kind of food is suitable for wild representatives of this species of reptiles. Do not forget that the main rule of the diet of any lizard is more vitamins. Sometimes it is even necessary to introduce vitamins into finished products (especially if we are talking about live food). By the way, it is better to serve living creatures in deep feeders so that they do not scatter. You can give your pet one piece at a time using tweezers. Sometimes this kind of food is simply released into the terrarium.

In general, try to immediately determine which foods your pet is delighted with and which swallows with difficulty, and build your lizard's diet based on these rules.
