Description of the profession

A laboratory assistant for chemical and bacteriological analysis prepares selected samples for subsequent studies of their properties and reactions. He can independently carry out laboratory testing of samples of raw materials and finished products.

To successfully perform his duties, a laboratory assistant must have knowledge in the field of natural sciences, GOST standards, the principle of sampling, and methods for conducting various types of research. The laboratory assistant's protective equipment includes: a robe, an apron, leather shoes, and goggles.

Before starting to fulfill his work obligations, the laboratory assistant needs to change into special clothing, check it for holes or breakages, check the work space (whether the ventilation system, locks are working, whether the dishes are intact), and evaluate the performance of the equipment being used. If problems are found, they should be reported to your manager immediately. Conducting any research and experiments in the presence of non-functioning equipment or poor-quality protective equipment is strictly prohibited.

The specialist also needs to check the markings on containers of aggressive substances and their tightness. Used laboratory glassware may only be cleaned in a special room with its own ventilation system.

At the end of the working day, the laboratory assistant for chemical and bacteriological analysis must return his workplace to its original state, remove all jars with reagents and other substances, close cabinets, and turn off equipment.

Since accidents are possible when working with aggressive substances, it is necessary to take precautions and be able to provide medical assistance. For example, after working with substances, it is imperative to wash your hands and wipe them dry with a towel in a specially designated place.
