Practical Tips

I am often asked what to do if you really need to learn foreign language but no language skills. I have already spoken and written quite a lot about this, but somehow it was not possible to summarize everything that was said. In this opus, I will try to fill this gap and talk about how how to learn any foreign language on your own. Since English is by far the most common and in demand, I chose it as an example.

There are no people incapable of foreign languages, after all, we all learned to speak Russian, and even many people with disabilities mental faculties they speak, read and write, albeit in the same language, but what's the difference? On the other hand, there are lazy people in abundance who benefit from saying that they are incapable in order to hide their laziness.
- Well, I'm incapable and that's it, I've been teaching for years, but the result is minimal, or even zero, - many say about themselves. And the language seems to be needed ...

So such "incapable" ones go in a circle: tutors - courses - independent study, but things are still there. Do not be offended, for God's sake, but your brain is lazy, although in other matters you may be a hard worker. What are the causes of what is happening and what should be done to correct the situation?

First you need to decide whether you need a language in principle. If so, then forward to the fight against laziness. If you have any doubts, quit or... stop doubting, otherwise there will be no results, you simply won’t wait for them, because you don’t have to wait, but move forward!

Now let's clarify the purpose. Ask yourself: "Why do I need a language?" If it’s just like that, “so that it is”, to show off a foreign word at a party, then, most likely, you have nothing, dear reader, it will not work, and you will stop there. We need a real goal. If you don't have it, either drop the class or come up with a goal!

And here are the hints:

  • Travel or tourist trip.
  • Studying at a prestigious foreign university.
  • Friendship, love, creating a family with a foreigner.
  • Playing football, for example, for Manchester United.
  • Work abroad.
  • Work in a multinational company or own international business.
  • Work in a national company that requires knowledge of a foreign language.

Confidently go to your goal and learn the language at the same time. At the same time, try to enjoy the process, this applies not only to learning languages; any work or study becomes many times more effective if done with pleasure.

About modern learning technologies: Modern technologies are wonderful, I am in favor with both hands. Without a doubt, audio and video recordings, online lessons and seminars are very useful when learning a language. But do not believe the promises to teach you English perfectly in a month, or even in 2 weeks. If you are promised this, it means that they most likely want to sell you something, or rather, to sell you something. Without serious, painstaking work, nothing will come of it. Yes, there are many programs that help you learn a language, but the programs do not teach for you, they only help you learn. And miracles happen so far mostly only in fairy tales (and we all love fairy tales very much, that's why all sorts of 25th, 26th and other "cadres" that promise to teach you in a dream thrive ...). Think about it, even Small child, who constantly hears his native speech, and whose brain absorbs everything like a sponge, spends 7-10 years on confident mastering the language.

Scared? In vain! Adults can learn much faster than children, due to the fact that they are able to do it in a more conscious and organized way. With such a study, the language can be mastered in a year to a level close to the native! Just keep in mind that in this case you will have to work with full dedication.

And now let's get down to business. If you're starting from scratch, start with the alphabet and pronunciation, that's the basics. After all, any language consists of sounds, and sounds are represented by letters, although in English all this is rather arbitrary :). There is an opinion that the alphabet is for beginners, "but he got me at school." This opinion is erroneous: without knowing the alphabet, it is very difficult to dictate your foreign name for writing, read the abbreviation, and it is impossible to fully use the dictionary.

Letters are importantly followed by words consisting of these letters. When starting to learn a language, be sure to limit yourself in time. Installation, maybe like this: in 3 months I will learn 2000 new words, and this is only 20-25 words a day. Follow this plan strictly. This applies to any work: if you don’t do it on time, you most likely will never do it. But don't chase word count; needed not only vocabulary its quality is important. Each person has his own conversational level in his native language and do not think that in a foreign language it will be very different from the original one. Read, analyze, find new words in books, the Internet, translate your Russian vocabulary into English. Textbooks and teachers fill your head with words that you may never need, so do not trust them completely, choose the words yourself, the words you need!

And now it's time to reveal to you one simple, but "highly classified" technology. Separate words to learn is meaningless! A word without context does not carry any information, and our memory is arranged in such a way that we remember only what we are interested in. By context, I mean not only the previous and subsequent text, but also the specific situation. For example, the word "worm" in fishing means one thing, but for a mechanic working with a worm gear, it is completely different. I'm not talking about the word "departure", (train departure, postal departure, and ... natural departure) But even this is not the main thing, the main thing is that words learn much faster when they are in a block. Such a block can be a sentence, or it can be 2 words. Combinations of a noun with an adjective or a noun with a verb are very good. But just blocks are not everything, the most interesting thing is that they must be unpredictable, "break the roof." For example, something like: white crocodile came for vodka. Remember the Russian folk tales, or the tales of Korney Chukovsky:

And the chanterelles
They took the matches
Let's go to the blue sea
The blue sea was lit.

Complete nonsense, but we all know, if not the whole poem, then, in any case, this quatrain by heart. Why? Yes, precisely because it is nonsense, because it awakens fantasy.

And here is the verse in English:

Ding Dong Dell,
Pussy's in the well.
If you don't believe me
Go have a smell.

The meaning is this: the cat fell into the well, whoever does not believe, go smell it ... Not a very pleasant rhyme, but how memorable!

In the Audio Class, you can expand your vocabulary with
specially selected phrases and phrases.

Having achieved the first results, you will feel that the learning process becomes a habit and it's great! After all, we not only can, but we must learn all our lives, however, more on that later. But the main thing that you will get is an indescribable feeling of delight from achieving the goal, and the acquired knowledge and experience will definitely come in handy in life.

In order to be able to quickly repeat what has been covered, check your knowledge, and also take into account the number of words learned, lead notebook-dictionary, number the words. Liked sentences and phrases, there - in a notebook. To this we can add that when learning a foreign language, it is very important to write by hand, because. it also involves motor memory. Covering with the left hand (or a sheet of paper) English words, read Russian and remember their meaning in English, then vice versa, closing right hand Russian words, read in English and remember the translation. Well, I think everyone studied at school ... Fortunately, now ready-made dictionary notebooks are sold at every step. But here is the time to remember about the vocabulary trainer, in which you can easily hide Russian, English or both texts by removing the desired bird above the table. How it all works, watch and listen.

Many advise using cards - such small cardboard boxes, where a sentence or a word is written in English on one side, and in Russian on the other. Perhaps they can be used as a temporary tutorial, but they tend to wrinkle and get lost, they are difficult to systematize, so the notebook, in my opinion, is more convenient and reliable.

Write transcription, but do not write it everywhere, save time - write only where you personally can doubt the pronunciation, because you are keeping this notebook for yourself! It is advisable to use generally accepted transcription signs, for example, IPA, but you can come up with your own or use Russian letters. However, in Russian letters you can hardly convey all the subtleties of English pronunciation.

But words alone, as you understand, are not enough for us. And, although sentences consist of words, you still need to know how to build these sentences. And the words themselves are remembered much better in context. In this regard, I recommend that you look into grammar more often and listen and read aloud in the language as much as possible. Everyone knows that it is useful, but very few do it. And indeed, it is not easy to force yourself to read long enough, but to come up with some small reward, encouragement, is very possible and necessary. …and don't give yourself a candy or a cup of coffee until you've read 3 pages aloud. In general, everything is according to Pavlov.

Think and speak English. How to do it? Start with simple, repetitive thoughts in your genius brain (or brain?), for example: "Something I'm hungry - I feel like eating", "That's enough for today - Let's call it a day" or quite prosaic: "What is it smell? - What "s the smell?". your phrases(just pay attention to your thoughts during the day and write them down) translate them with a dictionary, or find analogues on the Internet, write them down in a notebook and remember. Repeat them out loud several times. Force yourself next time, but no, allow yourself a luxury think about it in English. Develop this skill, gradually it will become a habit, and you will be able to think about everyday things in English quite easily. Whenever possible, speak your thoughts out loud. It would be ideal to find a partner who is ready to study with you. In this case, you will be listened to and answered, and if you can completely switch to English and refuse to speak Russian, the result will be stunning. At first it seems that it is very difficult, but once you get the taste, it will be almost impossible to stop you!

good to watch movies on dvd in english, but when viewing, be sure to put a notebook, a pen and a dictionary, paper or electronic, next to you. Press "pause", dig a dictionary and write, do not spare papers, all this will be recorded in your asset. It is equally important to get used to the sounds of the language. To do this, turn off the subtitles and try to catch the sounds by looking at the speaker's lips. This has a double effect: you learn to understand English speech by ear and see how native speakers pronounce the words. For the same purposes, you can advise watching English-language news on the BBC, CNN, NBC channels, watching videos on YouTube.

To learn English, it is useful to use an MP3 player, but listening to semi-understandable English gibberish quickly gets boring, you want to listen to music, or something funny. I will tell you a few secrets. First, find interesting and, for starters, not so difficult topics, secondly, if you undertake to listen to an audio book or any text in English, find its printed version, read it first, or at least quickly view it on paper / screen, as is done for example or. Thirdly, when reading, it is desirable to have English and Russian versions. Try to read in parallel with listening, but in this case, attention is scattered on visual and auditory perception, this option is best used only at the initial stage. The same applies to films with subtitles, subtitles are generally very distracting from viewing. Fourth, find the lyrics of your favorite songs and learn them, listening to music will become both useful and interesting. To find the lyrics of a song, in any search engine, type the name of the song in English and the word "lyrics", enjoy! And last but not least, if you want to learn something, be patient!

And now is the time to talk about laziness: it haunts us at every turn, lies in wait around every corner, and we are weak and weak-willed creatures, always happy to help her and ready to indulge! Laziness must be crushed, despite fatigue and ... laziness. Yes, we all work, we get tired, but when we come home in the evening, we can still find at least half an hour to learn the language. However, the morning hours, according to many experts, are more effective for studying, but here it’s how anyone succeeds. And, as mentioned above, do not forget about the mood, learn to enjoy the learning process, then everything will go easier and more fun.

Another important note: if you really want to learn english fast and are ready to sacrifice other things for this, make it your priority, set aside a few hours a day and work to the limit, not forgetting, however, about breaks. Find native speakers, communicate with them in person or online via Skype, Yahoo Messenger or ICQ. So you will see noticeable changes in 3-4 weeks.

And once again about age: the ideal age for learning a language is 1 month or a little earlier (children listen to their native language even before birth), learning languages, as well as everything else, becomes more difficult with age, and yet you can learn a language at any age . But, as we already know, adults have another important advantage: they know, or at least should know, why they need a language and learn it more meaningfully and purposefully.

To all of the above, we can add a curious fact: people who speak one or more foreign languages, according to statistics, live longer and suffer from senile insanity much less often. The brain, like other parts human body, for normal operation requires constant training.

Good luck in your studies and interesting interlocutors in different cities and countries!

Go through the phrase book and delete the sections you don't need.

For example, if you are not connected in any way with the field of law, you are unlikely to need the knowledge of a professional lawyer. Select only those sections that you really need, for example, "airport", "hotel", "shop", "street", "dating". Note: almost every phrasebook has audio materials that will increase the speed of your memorization several times. You need to work with the phrasebook in the following way: first you read the dialogue. Usually 3-4 times is enough. Then listen to the audio 5-7 times. The fact is that it is very difficult to hear English speech the first and even the second time. That is why, give most attention namely audio. For the best memorization of English phrases and expressions, use the following methods:

5 tips to learn spoken English on your own:

  • 2. Use bright stickers. Write down on stickers words or phrases that are very hard to remember. Paste stickers throughout the apartment in the most prominent places. The main thing is that you always see them. This is a very efficient and effective way.
  • 3.Communicate on Skype with foreigners. Did you know that at any time you can find an American who will be happy to help you with learning the language. Today it is possible to communicate via Skype, both through a regular call and through a video connection. Please note: this way of practicing English is absolutely free.

What kind of English do we study? British or American?

Correct answer: both.

On the one hand, British refers to the rules of pronunciation set many years ago. Almost no one speaks it now, but everyone who studies English, or sets the pronunciation, strives for it, incl. American actors (for example, Will Smith). Also in all textbooks standard grammar and spelling of words. It turns out that almost everyone learns British English. In American grammar and spelling is a little, quite a bit different from British, so look for any American English textbooks. very, very stupid.

On the other hand, British English also includes a special intonation that almost no one teaches, and it’s hard to get used to it. These intonation lessons also do not teach. It turns out that no matter how hard we try to pronounce, we will still get more American English than British. Intonation aside, our vocal apparatus is simply more like an American one. The video of the 1st lesson presents pure British English. The audio of the next lessons will be more like American English. Otherwise, English is standard, no need to come up with ridiculous reasons why I should or should not learn these lessons. Just teach! Responsible for quality! (Website author)

English language learning

There are no people who are absolutely incapable of learning languages. It's just that each person perceives information in his own way, remembers and systematizes it. By choosing the right learning method, you can quickly learn English at a good level.

The easiest solution is to visit a tutor English language. You can also enroll in a group for learning a foreign language. Usually, recruitment takes place taking into account the basic level of knowledge, so there is no need to worry that you will end up in a group where you will know English worse than other students. There are special courses for those who want to learn a language from scratch, so that the conditions for all involved are equal. Of course, you will have to pay for training. If you do not have free time to attend classes, purchasing an audio course may be a good option. This is very convenient, because it will turn out to combine classes with doing housework. You can find a lot of offers on the net.

You can also learn English on your own or take advantage of online training, such as englishskills. First of all, you need to get acquainted with the alphabet - learn the letters. Then feel free to start replenishing your vocabulary. Write out the words on the cards (they can be purchased ready-made), distribute them by topic. To quickly remember household items, you can attach a card with its name to each item (refrigerator, chair, carpet, window). Every time you turn your gaze to a particular object, you will automatically repeat English words. Do not try to learn a large number of them at once. Having mastered about 10 concepts in a day, repeat them as soon as possible. The next day, you can learn new words by repeating the past ones before that.

Once you have a decent vocabulary, it's time to get familiar with the grammar. Don't try to master all tenses at once. Learn gradually, otherwise you will quickly get bored with English. If you have children, don't be afraid to refer to their textbooks. You can also borrow a book from the library or find information on the Internet.

To consolidate what you have learned, it is best to read books in English. They will help you improve your reading speed, learn new words (keep a dictionary handy and refer to it whenever you need it). Over time, you will begin to catch the meaning of what you read without a dictionary. It also trains the skills of listening to music in English, watching movies, news and TV shows.

Many people know a fairly large number of foreign words and even know how to read, but they can’t speak. Therefore, it is important to practice communicating with native speakers (live, via Skype). This method is considered one of the most effective. If this is not possible, arrange to study English together with a friend. All communication between you should take place exclusively in a foreign language. As additional incentive you can come up with a system of fines (material or intangible). On average, 2-3 months of daily practice is enough to master spoken English at a good level.

In learning English, the most important condition for success is the regularity of classes. It is better to allocate half an hour to an hour daily than to study only on Sundays for several hours in a row.

There are always exits!

The main thing is your desire and ability to motivate yourself!
