Your baby eats a lot of “adult” foods and behaves accordingly. He is very active and curious, and is ready to try any of his mother's culinary delights. What should be an approximate menu for a child at 8 months? What products may already appear in it? And what might a baby’s diet for a week look like?

Porridge recipes

The baby enjoys eating porridge, of which there are at least five on his menu. These are buckwheat, rice and corn. You can also offer oatmeal and barley, but millet porridge is not yet given to a child of 8 months, as it is quite rough for his intestines. To make the porridge tastier, use the following recipes.

  • Barley porridge - 3 tablespoons of cereal, 0.5 cups of water, the same amount of milk, a spoonful of butter. Pour the cereal into boiling water with milk, boil until soft.
  • Buckwheat porridge - 3 tablespoons of cereal, a glass of water, a spoon of butter. Pour the cereal into cold water and cook over low heat.
  • Rice porridge - 3 tablespoons of cereal, a glass of water, a spoon of butter. Pour the cereal into boiling water, add melted butter, cook until tender.

The porridge will turn out perfectly tasty if you first grind the cereal into powder (a coffee grinder will help with this), and the cereal itself will be fresh, not stale. These recipes are suitable for the menu of a baby of 8 months, breastfed and bottle-fed.

New products

Every mother strives to diversify her child’s diet at 8 months. Its menu may include the following new products:

With the introduction of the first complementary foods, when the baby is 6 months old, many mothers ask different questions about this. A complementary feeding calendar can help you figure out when and in what order new foods should be introduced into your baby’s diet. One day the moment comes when it’s time to introduce your child to a dish like soup. In this article you can find information about when to give soup to infants, how to prepare it correctly, and what products can be used.

Dates for introduction to the menu

According to generally accepted norms for the introduction of complementary feeding, vegetable vegetarian soups appear on the children's menu after the introduction of vegetables into the diet. Essentially, you offer your child vegetable purees that are liquid in consistency by adding a decoction.

Pediatricians have somewhat different opinions about the age at which to start giving the first one. Some believe that the optimal age is 6-7 months. Others believe that the appropriate age is 7-8 months for formula-fed babies and 9-12 months for breastfed babies.

At about the age of 8-10 months, when meat already appears in the child’s diet, you can add meatballs or boiled chopped fillet. From 9-10 months, instead of puree soup, you can already offer your baby the first one, the vegetables in which will be chopped with a fork. This will stimulate the baby's chewing skills.

Closer to 1 year, the children's menu can be diversified with fish soup.

When introducing a new dish, always start giving broth with 30 ml and observe the reaction. Thus, you can gradually increase the volume of product consumed to the age norm (80-100 ml per day).

Cooking features

Soup for a child is significantly different from the one prepared for an adult table. The first one for a baby should be cooked exclusively on the basis of water, and not meat or fish broth, since this is still too heavy food for the baby. Toxins released during cooking can place excessive stress on the pancreas and liver. Fish is a strong allergen, so it should be postponed until a later date. It is better to purchase purified drinking water in bottles, intended specifically for feeding infants.

Start introducing these dishes into your diet with vegetarian recipes. Use only those vegetables that you have already introduced into your baby’s menu earlier, and to which he has not experienced an undesirable reaction from the body.

The first can be prepared from several types of vegetables. It is useful to use rice, buckwheat, and millet in cooking. Alternate different foods to diversify your child's taste sensations.

But it is not advisable to give legumes, bay leaves, smoked meats, tomato paste, garlic and pepper, as this can cause digestive problems for the baby. Adding salt, spices or herbs is also an individual question. It is recommended that at the beginning of complementary feeding you limit yourself to only greens - parsley, dill, etc. Always cook fresh food for each feeding to avoid intestinal infections.

For kids who are just getting acquainted with this dish, it is recommended to chop the vegetables using a blender or fork. Then you should add a little of the remaining broth to the resulting vegetable puree so that the consistency is uniform. A little later, you can switch to soups consisting of small pieces, and the broth will help the child chew and swallow food.

After introducing meat into complementary foods, you can add meat puree or boiled fillet of chicken, turkey, rabbit, beef or veal to the dish. The choice depends on what your baby prefers. Try to buy lean meats. Up to a year, give preference to boneless meat.

Recipes

Knowing the main features of preparing vegetarian and meat broths for infants, you can start cooking. We offer simple and tasty recipes that will help you diversify your baby's diet.

Some cooking tips

  1. When preparing Broccoli cabbage for any soup, you don’t have to chop it finely - it will boil on its own and can be mashed in the plate.
  2. If your baby does not yet have enough teeth to chew food or it is simply difficult for him to eat in large pieces, then it does not matter how you cut the ingredients. You can make puree after preparation by mashing or using a blender.
  3. If you have already introduced your baby to products such as sour cream, black and white bread, then you can also add them to the soup, diversifying the dish. You can also offer bread with soup instead of croutons.
  4. Fish soups should be cooked from white fish meat, since red fish is a strong allergen. You can choose pollock, cod, or hake fish for the soup. Red fish should be introduced into the diet no earlier than two years.
  5. I really “like” recipes where it says “cook the fish until done”, and to what readiness specifically and how to determine the readiness of the fish - “look in other sources”. How to cook fish for soup for a baby? Take fish fillet, cut into pieces, fill with water. When the water boils, add all the ingredients and cook for another 20 minutes. In this case, the fish is cooked for about 40 minutes, no more.

According to most parents, soup is a must-have dish on a child’s menu. However, complementary foods are introduced to the baby, starting with vegetables, then proceed to cereals and fruits. When can you start making soup? What recipes for this dish are suitable for feeding a child up to one year old? We will tell you in detail at what age you can offer your baby soups, and how to prepare them correctly.

Soup is an important food for a baby, so he gets used to more adult food

The optimal age of a child to introduce soups into the diet

From what month can an infant be offered soup for lunch (we recommend reading:)? According to experts, it is important to wait until the baby’s digestive tract is completely ready to work on digesting the dish. On average, the age when a baby can be given a liquid meal without fear is 9 months. At the same time, after consulting with a pediatrician, it makes sense to try feeding your baby soup earlier - starting from 8 months (we recommend reading:).

If a child is bottle-fed, he can taste a new dish even earlier - at 7 months (we recommend reading:). It should be understood that complementary foods should be introduced in small portions at first; by the end of the second week, it is advisable to increase the volume of the decoction to 100-150 ml. After a year, this portion may already be 200-220 ml.

The benefits of soup for infants are obvious: liquid dishes stimulate appetite, deliver nutrients as intended, and replenish fluid reserves in the body.

In addition, a decoction of vegetables and cereals indirectly helps other dishes to be better absorbed, since they stimulate the production of gastric juice. In this regard, they are called first courses, which are best eaten before eating more difficult to digest foods. Soups that are healthy for kids:

  • with the addition of vegetables they are a source of fiber, and also saturate the body with mineral salts and organic acids;
  • dairy with cereals - rich in proteins of plant origin, starch, vitamins;
  • peas or based on other types of legumes will also become a source of protein, they contain vitamins and microelements (more details in the article:);
  • with meat - the child needs animal protein, but it can be given closer to one year.

Pediatricians note that when preparing the first course, it is important to take into account other foods on the baby’s menu. If the child has already eaten mashed potatoes or other vegetables for breakfast, it is better to prepare soup for him with the addition of cereals.

Soup for a child is different from dishes for adults. It is important to understand that many food processing techniques are unacceptable in children's kitchens. We have collected recommendations from experts on preparing first courses for infants:

  • It is advisable to take purified water; do not boil water taken from the tap. Poor quality water will reduce the usefulness of the dish and add toxic substances to it.
  • Children should not cook in advance. Let the broth be freshly prepared, then most of the vitamins and microelements will be preserved, and the dish will be as healthy as possible. For the same reason, you should not feed your baby yesterday’s food.
  • It is better to peel and wash vegetables that are intended for preparing the decoction immediately before cooking.
  • Do not cook the dish over high heat. It is advisable to just bring it to a boil, then simmer on the lowest heat possible, covering with a lid. This technique will allow you to preserve maximum vitamins.

The very first children's soups were prepared exclusively with water.
  • Soups for infants are prepared with water, not broth. It is better to add meat to the dish later, cooking it separately. A rich meat broth will become a heavy burden for the baby’s imperfect digestive system.
  • If you want to make a dish bright, with a rich taste, it makes sense to use several types of vegetables, but do not overuse salt. It is not forbidden to add a little salt, but there should be a minimum amount of salt. To avoid over-salting the soup, use a saline solution. To prepare it you need to take 25 g of salt per 100 g of water. Use this solution for dishes at the rate of 1 tsp. for 200 g of food.
  • Most often, children are offered puree soups. This consistency of food is not only comfortable for a child who does not yet have teeth, but pureed food is ideal for the stomach and is easily digestible. Watch video recipes and explore the presented options for pureed soups.
