Lambert Pine Cone

The largest cone is that of the Pinus lambertiana pine (a type of evergreen tree in the genus Pine of the Pine family), also known as Sugar Pine (sugar pine) or Lambert pine. The length of the cones of this tree can reach ~60 cm, and the seeds up to 12 mm. This pine grows in the mountainous regions of the Sierra Nevada in the states of Oregon, Nevada and California, the western part North America and northern Mexico, vivo.

This large tree usually grows up to 70 m in height (in rare cases up to 81 m), and its diameter is from 1.2 to 1.8 m. The needles are grayish-green in color and slightly twisted at the ends, their length is 12 cm.

The tree was named Lambert's pine in honor of Aylmer Burke Lambert, an English botanist, researcher and expert on the species of the genus Pine, the author of the names of a number of botanical taxa. And the Sugar Pine was named because of the high sugar content in the resin. Seeds, like those of the cones of the Cedar tree, are suitable for human consumption.

It is noteworthy that in England there is a memorial plaque to the sugar pine cone: "The largest cone in the world in full size."

Pine cone Araucaria

In first place among the biggest cones of the planet the cone of the Araucaria Bidwill pine, also known as the Bunia pine (Araucaria bidwillii, a species of evergreen coniferous trees from the genus Araucaria of the Araucariaceae family).

This evergreen tree grows up to 50 m in height, 125 cm in diameter. Its leaves are oval in shape, pointed, reach a length of 2.5-7.5 cm, and a width of 1.2-1.5 cm. Araucaria Bidvilla is a dioecious plant , and the cones of the female individual grow much larger than the male ones, have a spherical-ovoid shape, with a thick axis. The dimensions of the cones are impressive in their size: they can reach 35 cm in diameter and weigh up to 3 kg.

Danger for tourists

In Australia, in the city of Warragul, a pine grows, which, according to the local population, is 120 years old. Its height is 50 m, and the cones on it grow up to 10 kg in weight. The local administration warns tourists about possible injuries from the cones of this tree and advises to stand at a safe distance from it.

Pinus lambertiana

Lambert pine (Canadian sugar pine, sugar pine, Oregon yellow pine) - a huge tree; the most gigantic of all pines, reaching from 50 to 100 m in height and from 3 to 6 m in diameter, with light brown smooth bark, cracking into small patches with age. Life expectancy averages 600-700 years, maximum - up to 900. The trunk is immaculately straight, highly branching. The branches are whorled, horizontal, slightly hanging, forming an ovoid crown.

Young shoots are chocolate in color. Needles in a bunch five; they are rigid, acutely triangular, cutting along the edges, pointed, bright green, with bluish longitudinal lines, more clearly visible on young needles. Needles from 9 to 11 cm long. The cones hang on cylindrical light orange legs, reaching 30 to 50 cm in length and 8 to 11 cm in thickness.

The scales of the cone are leathery, wedge-shaped, flattened; scutellum slightly thickened, dorsally convex, smooth, with hard margins, and with wide, strongly blunted carina. The nut-like seed is large, smooth, black, oblong-ovoid; 15 mm long and 9-10 mm wide, with not completely forked, long, brown, oblong blunt wing. Cotyledons from 13 to 15. The weight of the nut is 5-10% less than that of the Siberian pine.

This pine grows in the mountainous regions of the Sierra Nevada in the states of Oregon, Nevada and California, western North America and Northern Mexico, in natural conditions.

Named after the English botanist Aylmer Bourke Lambert, a researcher and expert on species of the genus Pine. It is noteworthy that in England there is a memorial plaque to the sugar pine cone: "The largest cone in the world in full size."

Unpretentious in relation to the soil, but especially loves loose, sandy, fresh clay soil. It can endure a short-term drop in temperature to -33 C. Propagated by roots, seeds, cuttings. It grows very slowly, especially in youth, which is observed even in its homeland, and only the oldest trees have rapid growth.

He suffers greatly and even dies from hard soil; top scores are possible only under particularly favorable conditions, namely, when this pine is grown in soils corresponding to those in which it grows wild, or in countries with a milder climate. Currently greatest danger for sugar pine is blister rust, which infects seedlings and kills them.

Seeds, like those of the cones of the Cedar tree, are suitable for human consumption. The seed is edible, sweet in taste, readily collected by the inhabitants. The liquid obtained from the dry distillation of this wood does not have the qualities of resin characteristic of the juice of a living tree; it acquires a sweet taste, like sugar or manna, which is sometimes used instead; it is also recommended as a cough remedy. This explains the name: "sugar pine". Resin tastes even better than sugar maple, and because of its laxative properties, you won't eat much of it.

The Indians gnaw on its seeds at their leisure. If they collect a lot, they grind it into flour and bake cakes. If the trunk burns during a fire, then a sweet, sugary syrup flows from it. Indians use it instead of sugar. It solidifies on the bark in hard pieces, like rosin.

    An excerpt characterizing Lambert's Pine

    – How is this possible?!.. – I asked dumbfounded. – Did you also know that they were not Jews? Caraffa nodded again. – But you don’t talk about it anywhere, do you? Nobody knows about it! And what about the TRUTH, Your Holiness?! ..
    - Do not make me laugh, Isidora! .. - Caraffa laughed sincerely. You are a real child! Who needs your “truth”?.. The crowd that never looked for it?!.. No, my dear, Truth is needed only by a handful of thinkers, and the crowd should simply “believe”, well, what - it no longer has of great importance. The main thing is that people obey. And what is presented to them at the same time is already secondary. The TRUTH is dangerous, Isidora. Where the Truth is revealed, doubts appear, well, where doubts arise, a war begins... I am waging MY war, Isidora, and so far it gives me real pleasure! The world has always been based on a lie, you see... The main thing is that this lie should be interesting enough to be able to lead "narrow-minded" minds... And believe me, Isidora, if at the same time you start proving to the crowd the real Truth that refutes them “faith” is unknown in what, and you will be torn to pieces, this same crowd ...
    - Is it really so smart person How can Your Holiness arrange such self-betrayal?.. After all, you burn the innocent, hiding behind the name of the same slandered, and the same innocent God? How can you lie so shamelessly, Your Holiness?!..
    - Oh, don't worry, dear Isidora! .. - Caraffa smiled. “My conscience is completely at peace! I did not raise this God, and I will not overthrow him. But then I will be the one who will cleanse the Earth from heresy and fornication! And believe me, Isidora, on the day when I "leave" - on this sinful Earth there will be no one else to burn!
I felt bad... My heart jumped out, unable to listen to such nonsense! Therefore, quickly getting together, I tried to get away from the topic he liked.
    – Well, what about the fact that you are the head of the most holy Christian church? Don't you think that it would be your duty to tell people the truth about Jesus Christ?...
    – Precisely because I am his “viceroy on Earth”, I will continue to be silent, Isidora! That's why...
I looked at him with my eyes wide open, and could not believe that I really heard all this ... Again, Caraffa was extremely dangerous in his madness, and it was unlikely that there was a medicine somewhere that could help him .
