We continue to visit Moscow establishments and taste various popular delicacies, so that we can then talk, for example, about where in the capital to try a real million-dollar donut or which Moscow coffee shop to visit to drink a cup of quality coffee. This time we got into the winter mood and remembered the warming mulled wine.

Mulled wine, or, translated from German, “warmed wine,” is a traditional drink of all climbers, skiers, snowboarders, and, more recently, frozen Muscovites. Year after year, with the onset of cold weather, a “hot cocktail” descends from the alpine peaks into city coffee shops and restaurants to warm us with its scorching warmth and envelop us in a spicy, intoxicating aroma. The best thing is to come home from the street with a red nose and blue lips, shake off the wet snow stuck to your clothes and order yourself a glass of mulled wine. One sip - and now you are, wrapped in a blanket, sitting by the fireplace in a cozy chalet, in some Alpine village... It’s just a picture from a magazine...

Some people like mulled wine hot, so it burns, while others drink it lukewarm. Some people like to experiment and ask to add apples with orange zest or even nuts to the drink, while others, on the contrary, remain faithful to the classic recipe. One thing is always the same: to experience all the charm of mulled wine, you must drink it in a cozy environment. We have selected five “home establishments” where this winter miracle is prepared.

Ice cafe "Medeo"

Fans of active recreation will support us in the fact that the best mulled wine is always prepared on the ski slopes and outdoor skating rinks. There were no real mountains in Moscow, but the skating rinks in the capital were always flooded. The largest is located in the Central Park of Culture named after. Gorky. There, last weekend, the creators of the legendary Solyanka presented to the Moscow public a new fashionable spot for warm friendly gatherings, which usually turn into hurricane winter parties.

What is inside: Ice cafe "Medeo" is not just another drinking establishment, it also offers night skating and Bavarian sausages on an open fire.

Menu and prices: in a couple of weeks, a real fire will start operating in the courtyard of the cafe, on which Bavarian sausages will be fried. While the fire is still being lit, in the cafe itself you can refresh yourself with jelly with Dijon mustard and wasabi horseradish (280 rubles) or juicy pork knuckle with sauerkraut (690 rubles). As for bar specialties, for 320 rubles they will pour you “real honey sbiten” or bring you as much as half a liter of the author’s mulled wine (360 rubles), in which, in addition to the standard set of fresh fruits and spices, they add soaked cherries. The sweet and sour berry transforms a familiar drink beyond recognition, adding tartness to it.

If you are cold, but still full of energy and do not intend to take off your skates, you can buy the above drinks at a street kiosk. The mulled wine here is the same as inside the cafe, but is cheaper only due to the volume (160 rubles for 290 ml). But we must not forget about the degree of this drink. It’s still better for beginners to try it after renting their skates back. Pretending to be Plushenko after mulled wine is not the best idea - it can be very painful.

Restaurant Delicatessen

Another European-style home establishment is hidden from prying eyes in the courtyards of Sadovaya-Karetnaya. Finding it is quite difficult, but you can, and by going down to the basement under the ironic sign “Delicatessen. Thank you for finding it,” you won’t want to leave. And not at all because you would be too lazy to climb the steep stairs with a full stomach (they feed you what you need here), but because “Delicatessen” is literally imbued with some kind of extraordinary homeliness. The feeling of a certain family is also added by the fact that the owners are always in the hall to greet and serve guests. Delicatessen is like a social network. You came in once or twice - and there were already familiar faces at the next table, and the bartender remembered what you ordered last time.

What is inside: Floral wallpaper hangs on the walls, and on the wooden shelves rare books sit side by side with cocktails with liqueurs. Sitting in the center of the room at a common table or lounging in a chair by the fireplace, you can endlessly examine every detail of the interior. But don't forget about the menu. Special offers are written in chalk on blackboards.

Menu and prices: The food here is homemade, but not at all banal. All burgers (from 350 rubles) and pizza (from 280 rubles), salads and soups (from 250 rubles) are prepared according to the original recipe of the chef and co-owner of the restaurant Ivan Shishkin. The huge alcoholic menu attracts with an abundance of light cocktails, homemade liqueurs and special offers from the bar: in the heat - cool lemonade (200 rubles / 1 l), and in the cold winter - warming mulled wine (250 rubles). Spicy, clove-star anise-cinnamon, imbued with the sweet and sour aroma of the citrus family, the drink is made from fortified sweet wine. After such “warming”, you can easily fly away and quickly slide into higher-grade drinks.

Cafe "People as people"

What is inside: this is a tiny cafe on Solyanka, with only eight tables, display cases with different goodies and a bar. The creative youth of Moscow have registered here since the first days of its opening. Beginners or already famous, but so far only in narrow circles, artists, designers, photographers and musicians dine here every day during the day. The warm and cozy atmosphere is conducive to flights of fancy and the birth of the most incredible ideas, so in the evening all the same people come here to discuss their new creative projects with each other over a glass or cup of something strong (or, conversely, non-alcoholic) (random visitors rare here).

Menu and prices: for seven (if not more) years, “People as People” have been treating their visitors with incredible love and respect to signature pies (from 130 rubles), sandwiches (150 rubles) and milkshakes (150 rubles). In addition to the above-mentioned dishes and drinks, the menu included three variations on the theme of mulled wine (all for 170 rubles). The classic version is traditionally prepared from dry red wine and orange juice, which gives the drink a pleasant sweet and sour taste and a New Year's aroma. Wine and cognac mulled wine, tart and strong, for those who want to increase the temperature before a night of fun. This winter drink based on white wine is very light and incredibly sweet, like ripe sultanas. It will surely appeal to those who missed dessert.

Cafe "Volkonsky Keyser"

What is inside: the atmosphere of a classic French boulangerie always reigns in your favorite pastry shop on Bolshaya Sadovaya. Everything here is saturated with the smell of fresh baked goods and all kinds of desserts. Today, sweets counters are decorated with gingerbread houses and Christmas tree decorations.

Menu and prices: from early morning, residents of Patriarch's Ponds rush here for fresh bread, and foreigners for croissants and delicious coffee. It's also crowded at lunchtime. “Volkonsky” prepares an absolutely amazing sandwich with mozzarella and meat quiche. You can take all the pastries and even drinks with you or, if you are not in a hurry, enjoy a meal in an intimate cafe at a common high table. But it’s best to lounge on a wide window sill with soft pillows (just like in France) and order a glass of mulled wine. This cafe does not skimp on wine, which is why the price tag for the winter drink is not cheap. But, believe me, 290 rubles. It's worth it for a glass of mulled wine, which has absorbed all the sweetness and spice of the aromas that reign here.

Cafe Courvoisier

When it comes to alcohol, it would be a shame not to mention the establishment with the cognac name Courvoisier, which, by the way, celebrates its tenth birthday this week. Since its opening, Courvoisier has established itself as the best place for a pre-party and still holds its mark.

What is inside: On winter evenings, visitors crowd around the bar and dessert displays or dance on the windowsills. In the summer, when the panoramic windows of the cafe are wide open, the whole honest company lights up on the street. After midnight, the crowd slowly leaves only to return here at dawn for breakfast (from 100 rubles). The most interesting thing is that on weekdays the same crowd, only dressed in formal dresses and jackets, comes to Courvoisier for a business lunch (370 rubles).

Menu and prices: if you used to be an avid party-goer and never missed a single party “for your friends”, and then suddenly interrupted your nightly vigils, you should stop by Courvoisier, even if only for a cup of coffee (from 95 rubles), and you will immediately find yourself in circle of old friends.

So, after a long absence, we decided to drop in to see old friends for a little while. And, of course, we were warmly received here, invited to the anniversary and treated to mulled wine (200 rubles) - isn’t this home comfort? And mulled wine! What about mulled wine? It's still perfect, because the Courvoisier is incredibly stable. The drink is very similar to the one prepared on the Alpine slopes. With the simplicity of serving, you can feel the noble taste of good wine.

Mulled wine, grogs and other warming cocktails are one of the few seasonal joys of our winter. Hurry to pamper yourself: another month or two and there will no longer be any pleasure in sitting in a cafe after a long walk in the cold, warming your hands on a glass and sipping scalding spicy wine. The foodie did some reconnaissance and found out where the most correct and/or interesting drinks are served in the city.

The three most classic tastes, which, of course, are familiar to every gastronomically educated person, are mulled wine, grog and punch. Everything rests on them. It is clear that every self-respecting establishment has them in its “winter” repertoire. Some of the restaurants are not the worst! - adhere to the theory that the less “gag”, the better for the business: the recipes are simple, as is often the case, to the point of genius, and any “better” will only make them worse. Others, on the contrary, show such creativity that their own mother would not recognize ordinary mulled wine.

For young ladies and romantics

If you believe the legend, the Bernardine monks were the first to come up with the idea of making mulled wine, and the recipe went “to the people” when they gave their healing potion to a traveler caught in a snowstorm in the Alpine mountains. So imagining ourselves as this traveler is part of our pleasure. After all, perhaps the main thing in mulled wine is the ceremony: anyone can prepare a classic “hot wine”, armed with a bottle of ordinary “khvanchkara,” but not even every establishment can create a suitable atmosphere for it. Although, you know what they say... Atmosphere - it always exists only in the soul. Come in out of the cold, sit down at a table by the window so that you can see the falling snow, and the lamp casts a cozy shadow, and so that it seems that the whole world has fallen into hibernation and only you have miraculously escaped - this is where the right moment to have a drink comes hot mulled wine.

For men and machos

Grog is a completely different story. Grog is an absolutely manly drink, the sole invention of British sailors. Three hundred years ago, every sailor was entitled to a daily portion of rum, but as a result of some machinations by the management, the rum began to be diluted by half with water. The people became indignant and began to heat up their “harmful premium” by adding more sugar, honey and lemon. And it turned out pretty good. Modern bartenders, unlike those sailors, are much freer in the means of self-expression, so you won’t see anything in today’s grogs - from exotic fruits to syrups and caramel. But this, perhaps, is even good; today the agile psyche of not every urban intellectual could withstand the intensity of passions of a real sea “cocktail”.

By the way, demand grog in porcelain cups - this is the rule. This way it cools down more slowly, and this is more important than beauty, which, for example, encourages you to pour mulled wine into glass glasses.

5 . Theme bar

Toddy Grog (200) - rum, black tea, grenadine, fruit, spices - 150 rub.

For creative people who have come under Eastern influence

Punch, unlike grog and mulled wine, is a complex drink. This follows even from its name - the ancient Indian word “panch” means “five”. Apparently the ingredients. But these days, punch is considered a drink for the lazy: it is rarely limited to five ingredients. The base, which was “approved” a couple of centuries ago (hot rum, to which separately brewed sugar syrup, honey, lemon juice is added), is poured with wine, all kinds of liqueurs, ale, fruit juices and even beaten egg yolks. Add fresh and canned fruits (pineapple, orange, peaches), freshly grated ginger, spices (cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, nutmeg) and all sorts of other stuff. Jamaican star fruits complete the bazaar experience in one drink.

The most exotic punch

1 . Pancho Villa

Planter's Punch (250 ml) - peach liqueur, dark and light rum, orange juice and pineapple juice, grenadine - 210 rub.

2 . Wax

Punch (200 ml) - white wine, rum, orange, grapefruit, lemon, sugar, spices - 250 rub.

3 . Vesna cafe

Ginger-pear punch (non-alcoholic) (200 ml) - sencha tea, pear juice, ginger, pear - 300 rub.

For those who are more susceptible to winter blues

The famous writer Milan Kundera noted in one of his books that the basis of happiness is repetition - when the same thing is done day after day. This is what happiness looks like from the point of view of a dog who does not like and does not expect change. It's more complicated with people. Even if it seems to you that you are a monogamist and you are always drawn to order already familiar and tried dishes, sometimes it is worth giving in to the advice of horoscopes and taking note of something new. When mulled wine, punch and grog already seem like close relatives, there is always the opportunity to choose one of hundreds of cocktails made in their image and likeness - but already very vaguely reminiscent of the original. Sometimes they are worth trying, if only for the boundless imagination of their creators: all these “heady snows,” “African passions,” “winter gardens,” “Tatiana, do you remember the golden years?” — and the like, right up to hot “sex on the beach.”

But there is, of course, another win-win option: Irish coffee. Always (if made correctly) delicious in any coffee shop and absolutely ingeniously simple to prepare at home. Pour hot coffee into a tall glass glass (ideally, it is good to preheat it by rinsing it with boiling water), add cane sugar (as they say, to taste), stir, pour in Irish whiskey, stir again. Toward the end, add more fresh cream. And before they even noticed, a most pleasant evening had happened.

The best Irish coffee

1 . Delis cafe

Irish coffee (170 ml) - 220 rub.

2 . Pepperoni

Irish Coffee (200 ml) - Irish whiskey, hot espresso, brown sugar, fresh cream - 400 rub.

3 . Apple Bar&Restaurant

Irish coffee (190 ml) - 280 rub.

4 . Citycafe "On the stairs"

"Irish coffee" (190 ml) - coffee with Irish whiskey - 150 rub.

5 . Kolbasoff

Irish coffee (200 ml) - 180 rub.

Best Hot Cocktails of the Season (Time Out Magazine's Pick)

1 . Juicy bar

Especially for this winter, a collection of hot cocktails from freshly squeezed juices was created - for example, “Spiced Apple” (apple, lemon, cinnamon, ginger) and “Orange-berry punch” (orange, allspice, cranberry, blueberry, honey). Price – 230 rub. for any position.

A youthful place with vague food and an excellent cocktail menu. Hot cocktails are included in the "When It's Cold Outside" chapter. Toddy Grog is mixed from rum with black tea, grenadine, fruit and spices. Heather Tea uses Drambuie and Benedictine liqueurs instead of rum. And mulled wine is made with honey. For each of three cocktails they ask for 150 rubles.

3 . Correa's

The chain of popular cafes recently expanded by one location by changing the sign of the Uley restaurant, where Isaac Correa once started as a chef. The best warming drinks on the menu are orange grog and mulled wine for 200 rubles. per serving.

4 . No alcohol law

A network of public wine bars in a neoclassical style. In mid-autumn, a special program “Hot Autumn” was launched, within which “Autumn” mulled wine with fruit (99 rubles), honey grog with dark rum, cognac, honey and lemon (120 rubles), Irish coffee ( 120 rubles), “Cow” coffee with Baileys liqueur, milk and whipped cream (120 rubles), “Napoleon” coffee with cognac and Kahlua liqueur (120 rubles).

5 . Coffee mania

The best cocktail of winter 2007/2008 is coffee with Frangelico liqueur (210 rubles). For lovers of the classics, every evening at the arena there is coffee with cognac (179 rubles) and Irish coffee (210 rubles).
